India revs up for a dozen new small cars by 2010

NEW DELHI: Come 2010 and the Indian small car market is all set to hit fourth gear. Close to a dozen new small cars from big names, including Maruti-Suzuki, Honda, Volkswagen, Fiat, Ford and Toyota, are expected to hit the road, rejuvenating a market that accounts for as much as 75% of car sales.

As a fallout, the current lot of small cars could possibly be headed for a phase-out, aided by hefty discounts as manufacturers try to reduce their stocks to make way for the new entrants.

The new cars, many of which would also have variants loaded with latest features like automatic drive, ABS and airbags, will flow from almost the entire spectrum of carmakers present in India and be available in the Rs 3 lakh-Rs 5 lakh bracket (excluding the Rs 1 lakh wonder Tata Nano). To take advantage of the special subsidized excise duty for small cars, the under-4m models would sport engines below 1200cc in petrol and below 1500cc in diesel.

Competition to heat up in small-car segment

While Maruti-Suzuki will introduce Splash and A Star by year-end, Hyundai, will bring in i20 by the same time. The Fiat Grande Punto is also expected before the year runs out. Tata Motors is also set to offer an all-new version of its Indica, that has been the mainstay of the company for the last many years.

Many new players would also make an entry into the small segment. Prominent ones include Honda with much-awaited ‘Jazz’ and Volkswagen, the European numero uno, who will also join the bandwagon as it will roll out an Indianized-version of its popular Polo compact in 2010.

Another biggie falling for small cars would be Toyota, a company that leads globally but lags in India. Toyota will launch small cars in both petrol-diesel options and company officials said perhaps, more than one small car will roll out. And that’s not all. After 2010, many more launches are expected from Skoda, one each from Honda and Hyundai and a Rs 2 lakh car from General Motors.

The automotive market in India is extremely competitive, with GM, Hyundai and Indian automakers Maruti and Tata dominating. This blog previously mentioned that Tata Motors was using Fiat technology to challenge Suzuki / Maruti alliance.

Ratan Tata, the irrepressible chairman of Tata Motors, has committed to a ‘people’s car’, an enclosed passenger vehicle at a price millions of Indians could afford.

While still skeptical of Tata’s 1-lakh car, Suzuki is answering the challenge. According to Green Car Congress, “Cars with engine displacements of 0.8 to 1.6 liters constitute about two-thirds of the more than one million cars sold in India each year.”

In January Suzuki plans to unveil a concept model of the 1.0-liter A-Star car at the Auto Expo 2008 in New Delhi. Chairman Osamu Suzuki announced at a press conference that the Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. factory has set a 2008-09 production target of 150,000 units of the tiny, cheap, super fuel efficient, hatchback model.

This blog previously noted that Honda planned to challenge Suzuki in this market. According to Carazoo India1, Renault-Nissan entered an agreement with Ashok Leyland to churn out low cost trucks and with Bajaj Autos to engineer a $3,000 car by 2010. And, Dubai-based Praktiko plans to build2 a factory in 2008 to produce a low cost, small, very economical minicar for export to Africa and India.

Maruti A Star is a car that has been recently launched. Maruti Suzuki Limited’s research and development (R&D) team in Gurgaon has manufactured a smart and sleek car, termed as the Global India car. It is the A-Star concept car by Maruti.

Maruti A Star will be an A-Segment car as per the European car standards. In the words of Shinzo Nakanishi, the managing director of Suzuki Motor Corporation the Maruti Suzuki India plans to commence production of A-Star by the end of October 2008. He also added that the car would be produced from the company’s Manesar facility in Haryana.

Designed by Rajesh Kumar Gogu and Saurabh Singh of Maruti Suzuki India, the Maruti A Star car, which is a five-door hatchback with a 1,000 cc petrol engine has been engineered keeping in mind the trends and standards of the European market. On 16 January, apart from A-Star, Maruti Suzuki showcased two other concept cars –Kizashi and Splash.

By the end of 2010, Mr. Nakanishi and his team of Maruti Suzuki experts has planned to export almost 100,000 units of the new Maruti A Star to Europe. According to Nakanishi, the manufacturing capability of Maruti has peaked to a certain level and is capable of exporting the small Suzuki cars exclusively for the European market. It would be according to the Euro-V compliant with a 1.0-litre aluminum petrol engine. The pricing of the car however, is yet to be worked out.

An estimated figure of around 1, 00,000 units of Maruti A Star will cater to the European Markets under the Suzuki badge, the rest 50,000 units will be sold within India. The A-Star is regarded as one of the most desired projects of Maruti Suzuki India. The Suzuki team has pinned a lot of hope in it.

In fact, the concept of Maruti A Star is a first for Maruti Suzuki India’s research and development team. Maruti Suzuki has entered into an agreement with Nissan to sell A-Star under the formers brand name in the US market. Nakanishi, however, ruled out an estimated price cut for Maruti 800 and rejected reports of Maruti’s venture into the Rs.100, 000 segments.

After the Swift diesel, Maruti Suzuki India Ltd (MSIL) is now engaged working on a second-generation diesel engine, which will be launched with its fifth global car —Maruti A Star. The new five-door hatchback car, presented at the 9th Auto Expo along with other concept cars – Kazshi and Splash will have a newly developed Euro V-compliant 1.0 liter petrol engine.

Maruti A Star will be manufactured along with Swift. It is being planned at the MSILs Manesar plant that the desired capacity will be increased from one-lakh units of present to three lakh units once the production of A-Star starts. With exports from Mumbai port getting crammed, countrys second largest passenger car exporter, Maruti is now all set to explore in the ports of Gujarat with new vision and hope. Marutis-AStar

Maruti to launch A-star in October’08
On the sidelines of the 48th SIAM annual convention in Delhi, Maruti Suzuki India on 5th September’08 has categorically stated that it will neither launch a model priced similar to Nano, or would reduce the price of its existing Maruti 800 model. According to a senior official of MSI, the company has always been in small car segment and has always concentrated on that category of up to 1200 cc cars. But Nano is something which is a totally different segment and it is not venturing or competing in that segment. However, he added that the company is at an advantageous position because it has the expertise in designing small cars. He concluded by saying that with demand for small cars going up, MSI will scale up its R&D capabilities to design cars that are best suited for the Indian market.

Keeping in mind the current market trend, he said the company would be launching its global compact car, A-Star in October’08, which would boast of the advanced K-series engine that is not only fuel efficient but also complies with Euro-V emission norms. The car would be launched in India first and then introduced to the European and other markets. The company plans to exports over 200,000 units of A-Star by 2010-11. Additionally, in 2009, the company would launch Splash.

A senior company official said that the company will begin exports by December 2008.

It is also learnt that initially, the car will be exported to the European markets.

Maruti Suzuki India Ltd has also decided to increase local research and development (R&D) for small cars to 90%.

Moreover, the company recorded a 9.2 percent decline in August sales amid a depressive economy, growing interest rates and tighter lending standards.

During August 2008, Maruti sold 59,908 vehicles, as against 65,968 vehicles sold during the same period of the last year (August 2007).

Maruti is 54.2 percent owned by Japan’s Suzuki Motor Corp and covers about half of the Indian car market, with models including the best-selling Alto and Swift hatchbacks.

At 12:39 am, shares of Maruti Suzuki stood at Rs 683.90, up 2.9%, on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE). Current EPS & P/E ratio stood at 59.05 and 11.55 respectively. The share price has seen a 52-week high of Rs 1252 and a low of Rs 474.90 on BSE.

The much awaited Maruti A-Star is all set to be launched in India. It shall come to India with the next generation K-series engine which is an extremely fuel efficient engine. The new A-star shall roll out from the Manesar plant, Gurgaon, next month. All the Suzuki cars shall have the new engine in next three to five years. The new A-star shall also be Euro IV and Euro V compliant which would lend its competitive advantage amongst its competitors in the same segment.

Europe is the main market for all Suzuki cars and it aims to launch the same engine in Europe as well. Suzuki Chief, Osama Suzuki, is on a three day visit to India to closely monitor the developments apart from attending Company’s Annual General Meeting. Suzuki hopes that the one-litre petrol engine or the “green Engine” would enable the company to gain a strong foothold in the European market. India is Suzuki’s manufacturing and exports hub for small cars that cater to the global demands.

The new engine also means that Maruti Suzuki would be able to address the new demands from the compact car segment in India as well which is witnessing a slew of launches each month in spite of declining sales due to weak economic conditions.

Maruti’s A-Star to meet European Emission Norms
Business Standard
New Delhi: Maruti Suzuki’s compact A-Star, which will be launched in October, is expected to surpass the earlier strict emission norms announced by the company.

Emission from the A-Star not only complies with the Euro 3 (Bharat-3) norms that are operational in 13 Indian cities, including Delhi, but also geared to meet stringent emission norms that will be implemented across Europe in the coming years.

The A-Stars CO2 emission will be even lower than 109 gm/km which we had envisaged earlier. This is much lower than the European emission norms that require cars to emit 120 gm/km in the future said Shinzo Nakanishi, MD, Maruti Suzuki.

India’s Euro 3 norms is 5 years behind those currently enforced in Europe, while Euro 4 norms that are enforced outside the 13 Indian cities are 10 years behind European benchmarks. While gaseous and particulate matter comprise Euro 4 gradation in India, Europe’s emission reports estimate the CO2 discharge levels only. Lower CO2 levels in cars means the car has superior fuel efficiency, said Anomita Chowdhury, Associate Director, Centre for Science and Environment.

Maruti Suzuki’s decision to manufacture the A-Star car in India is part of parent Suzuki’s overall strategy to make India the manufacturing hub for the production of small cars like the Alto, Swift, and Maruti 800. We may consider manufacturing the A Star later in China which will cater to the Chinese market only. In that case we may have to export auto components from India to China, said Nakanishi.

The firm hopes to export about one lakh units of the A-Star to Europe. In about 2-3 years from the launch, we may export to S America and the SE Asian region, he said.

As part of its strategy to consolidate its position in the A2 segment, which will witness newer players like Nissan, Toyota, and Honda this year onwards, Maruti Suzuki has indicated it will launch the compact Splash next year.

I am an employee of Maruti and did a test drive on A-star. Though the car looks grand from outside especially for a price of 3-4 L, its shock absorbers are no good and give bumpy jerks.The wheels are also small and the space inside has not been utilized well. The dicky is also very tiny. At speeds above 100 Km/Hr, the car starts vibrating. In my test drive the mileage was 13 Km/L which is standard and nothing great.

Maruti Suzuki India on Tuesday announced that its new compact model A-Star would be priced in the range of Rs 3-4 lakh.

The country’s largest carmaker has begun the production of A-Star hatch for building a pre-launch inventory.

A-Star has been planned for launch this year in October. The compact car would further help the company to consolidate its position in the Indian car market space.

Meanwhile, the parent of the Indian company, Suzuki Motor Corporation, has asked its subsidiary to boost its research and development (R&D) for small car engines, according to news reports.

The latest news I saw about the prize of A-Star car that…. This would be start from 4 lacs and above…and would launch in india market on September 208….. I am bit confuse to buy that because if A-Star car comes under the smalls car then this cost would be fine (Please suggest me).

Because if it is in 4 lacs then i think i10 would be better option to buy a new car instead of A-Star. Guys please compare this and keep posted comments on this.

Also I can see one News article on marutisuzuki website stating price around 4 lac.

I got disappoint by that news since I thought of it in price band 2.7L to 4.5L as mentioned on different websites. And decided to book wagonR, but still I am waiting for it.

The A-Star will be the fifth world strategic model from Suzuki which means the same car can be manufactured simultaneously in other countries. Suzuki will sell the same car in Europe but under the Alto as well as under the Celerio names.
The car manufacturer will use the K-series engine for the gasoline driven car and the engine production will begin in October this year. The official said the A-Star has been positioned as an A2 premium segment car. The A2 segment has a 71 per cent share of the Indian passenger car market which is about 1.3 million units.
Intentionally or unintentionally the design of the A-star reminds the Hyundai’s i10 in most sense. The low slung grille, the flame shaped headlamps that extends from bonnet to the bumper and the prominent strip that houses the number plate has already become familiar to Indian customers through i10. However the vertical A-pillar and inverted C-pillar gives the A-star a bulged out apperance. We believe the A-star would be slightly more roomier. The large glass house at the rear will allow more light to come in. Gone are the boomerang headlamps as shown in the A-star concept, the 3D trapezoidal tail lamp cluster flows from the windshield to the bumper.
The newly developed A-star platform is based on the much successful Suzuki’s alto platform. A-star shares the same 2360mm wheelbase of other cars built on Alto platform. A-star will be the first car to be produced solely in India.

The car industry, which witnessed a decline of 6.59 per cent in October, struggles to sell car in the year-end as most customers postpone purchases for a new model year. MSI is hoping that the novelty factor associated with its 5th global model will help in overcoming the challenge.

“November and December are usually tough months for carmakers. Knowing that very well we will be launching the A-Star so that it can bring excitement to the market,” MSI Executive Officer Marketing and Sales, Mr Mayank Pareek said.

“There have also been instances of customers coming to see new models and ending up purchasing existing models. A-Star might as well be that bait,” he added. The A-Star will be the latest in a series of global models that Suzuki, MSI’s Japanese parent, has launched over the past few years and will be manufactured solely in India.

The company is aiming to sell about 50,000 units in the Indian market and one-lakh units to be exported. It will be manufactured at its Manesar plant. MSI claims that according to the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI), the A-Star delivers a mileage of 19.59 km per litre.

It is powered by the company’s new KB10 998 cc petrol engine and will be rolled out in three variants. While the company has not announced the price of the new car, it is expected to be priced around Rs 4 lakh. - PTI

No doubt its superb to stare at, can be easily called as the Greek god of automobile’s world.. numerous facility to compete with Chevrolet spark santro and i10..But as the rumors speeded like a wild fire that its around 2.90-4 lacks and is mainly targeted to the middle-class people but its just the fake and deceiving way to attract the public and to make them a fool out of it…people waited and wasted their valuable time searching reading for this long awaited grand desired car, but ultimately people is turning their backs when getting to know the price tag of it…maybe best deal for the higher model 1 but not at all worthy of 3.47k for the 1st model, its better that people should go for Chevrolet spark which has renovated its 1st model’s price unto great extend and that also with 3yrs warranty, more than 14kms per liters(not at all bad) and its really a good small and a trendy smart car with a sport look…price of the 1st model of a-star just wont attack many buyers.. wearas i know few govt employees who too were genuinely targeting this car waiting for its launch and thinking its competitive spirit and the taking the price value as its ideal deal and concern. maruti should take this price of the 1st model in concern otherwise it wont work out. People need something, which is added with the insurance and tax together not just the value of the car, which is beyond the reach of all. Long awaited of the people doesn’t mean become crazy for it and jumping in the well blindfolded that also in the time of inflation and nano, i20 and spark making its huge way out for 1year.
I spoke out on behalf of all those who targeted to buy astar but ultimately changing their mind and also few government employees and of course as I too changed my decision from buying this.
